PHOENIXVILLE COMMUNITY HEALTH FOUNDATION
AWARDS FOURTH QUARTER GRANTS
PHOENIXVILLE, PA -- At its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 the Board of Directors of the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation authorized twenty-three grants to community organizations totaling nearly $500,000. This round of grant awards was the fourth of four to be made during fiscal year 2007-2008 year that began on July 1, 2007.
The Foundation Board was privileged to be able to provide financial assistance to the following non-profit organizations whose work in the greater Phoenixville area contributes to the overall health and welfare of the area’s citizens. Below is a brief summary of the grants made to these non-profit organizations:
In Level I funding to create avenues for, and improving access to, direct health care services:
- Community Volunteers in Medicine – $40,000 for general operations in support of services to residents of the greater Phoenixville area.
- Camphill Village Kimberton Hills – $33,295 to fund the healthcare component of the Aging in Community Program. The grant is payable as $23,295 outright and $10,000 as a $1:$1 match from new donors.
- Planned Parenthood of Chester County – $30,000 general operating support for the Phoenixville Health Center.
Level II funding of services addressing health and quality of life issues for the fragile, disabled, and those at-risk of falling further behind socially and economically:
- Access Services – $21,187 for respite care for Phoenixville area residents with special needs.
- BCS Yes! – A $5,000 grant in support of a health, fitness and nutrition program at the Meridian Home for girls in Royersford.
- Chester County Futures – $20,000 in support of the Phoenixville program offering academic support and mentoring for at-risk high school students.
- Domestic Violence Center of Chester County – $30,000 to expand services and programs to residents of the greater Phoenixville area, to include counseling, safety planning, court accompaniment, children’s services and transitional housing.
- East Pikeland Township Police Department – A grant of $2,800 to purchase AED [Automatic External Defibrillator] devices for the department.
- Good Works, Inc. – A grant of $8,000 for operating support in relation to the Phoenixville program.
- Holcomb Behavior Health Systems – A $15,000 grant to fund the Life Skills Program within the greater Phoenixville area. The program seeks to strengthen, empower and advocate for emotionally vulnerable children and their families.
- Magee Rehabilitation Hospitaln – $5,000 for the “Think First” program in partnership with Chester County COAD. The mission of Think First is to prevent head and spinal cord injuries through education and community awarenes.
- Mental Health Association of Southeastern PA – $15,000 for the Compeer Program’s outreach within the greater Phoenixville area.
- Mom’s House – $10,000 for general operating support as the organization supports single mothers in full-time pursuit of their education.
- Phoenixville Community Services [PACS] - $96,156 for the following purpose: $26,156 for operating support, $20,000 for emergency funds, and $50,000 to establish a full-time financial development initiative.
- Phoenixville Area Positive Alternatives [PAPA] - $60,000 for the following purpose: $50,000 for program operational support for two years, and $10,000 for the 2008 SAFE program.
- Phoenixville Community Education Foundation – A grant in the amount of $3,590 in support of Camp Jump In, a new initiative of the Phoenixville Kindergarten Center preparing at-risk pre-school students for kindergarten.
- Royersford Outreach, Inc. – A $15,000 grant for building maintenance and repairs.
- Phoenixville Senior Adult Activity Center - $54,000 over two years to establish a development office and hire a part-time development director.
- Support Center for Child Advocates - $10,000 to develop the Outcomes in Behavioral Health Project in the Phoenixville area. The project seeks to improve access to, and participation in, treatment services for at-risk children and youth.
- Variety – The Children’s Charity - $20,000for after-school and summer programs for children with disabilities living within the greater Phoenixville area.
Level III funding includes civic, recreation, community and economic development, and non-profit capacity building services such as board training and strategic planning:
- La Salle Nonprofit Center – $20,000 for technical assistance for local Phoenixville non-profit organizations.
- Phoenixville Area School District – $2,000 for the 2008 Operation F.O.C.US. the Phoenixville High School alcohol-safe post prom party.
- Schuylkill Township – $10,000 for construction of a walking path between Phoenixville Area Middle School and the Freedom Valley YMCA on Pothouse Road.
- Spring Ford Education Foundation – A $2,000 grant for the 2008 SNAP[Student Need an Alternative Party] an alcohol-safe post-prom event.
The Foundation Board also approved several special requests for funding:
- $10,000 as a grant to Open Hearth, Inc. to be used for long-term and short-term rent payment assistance and security deposits for persons with a mental health diagnosis and who are actively in treatment for their illness. This grant promotes the public health, quality of life and safety for individuals who are considered at risk for homelessness.
- $5,000 as a grant to the National Marrow Donor Program as the lead sponsor for local bone marrow donor drive with the goal of adding 600 new donors to the donor registry.
- $5,574 as a grant to the West Chester University Foundation to sponsor two human service providers from the Phoenixville community who work with Latinos and would benefit from cultural competency training. This summer course is affiliated with West Chester University’s Department of Nursing and includes a cultural exchange between health care workers in Mexico and Chester County.
In other business The Governance Committee of the Board of Directors, Chaired by Rev. Cynthia Krommes, presented the Slate of Officers for the 2008-2009 year: Chairperson: Amy Barto, Vice Chairperson: Frank Cirone, Secretary: Karen Coldwell, Treasurer: Eubank [Ted] Travis-Bey. The following founding Directors, whose term has expired, were designated as Directors Emeritus: Richard Downs, Richard Kunsch, Sr., and James Reading. The following Board members were nominated for retention to the Board of Directors with a term of 7/2008 through 6/2012. The following individuals were nominated for election to the Board of Directors: Charles Henry, Marian Moskowitz, and Richard Kirkner, representing the Borough of Phoenixville.
The mission of the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation is to improve the overall health and quality of life in the greater Phoenixville community. Louis J. Beccaria, Ph.D., the Foundation’s President and CEO, noted that: “These grants support our mission in that they address the physical, behavioral, social, economic and civic health of the Foundation’s community.”
With the grants awarded at this April meeting, the total amount of philanthropic funds returned to the greater Phoenixville area this 2007-2008 fiscal year has been over $2.3 million and since the Fall of 1998, when the Foundation began operation, is now over $16 million.
